Marc's Memo - June 2017 Updates
On Wednesday, June 14, 2017, the halls of Congress were shaken when an individual committed a violent attack against my Congressional colleagues. As a nation, we must remember that violence of any kind does not solve problems. Whether we’re Democrats or Republicans, we should always conduct our debates in a civil manner. At the end of the day, we are all here to continue to give voices to the communities we represent. Whether it is ensuring our veterans have the resources they need to ease their transition into civilian life, ensuring all Americans have access to quality healthcare, or defending vulnerable refugees, I will continue to fight for you.
In this month’s newsletter, you will find a brief snapshot on how I have been hard at work on behalf of the 33rd Congressional District.
As always, I invite you to connect with me through my official website, Facebook page, and Twitter account to stay informed on what I am working on in the district and in D.C. Don’t forget to remind your friends to subscribe to my e-newsletter, so they don’t miss out on any updates on my efforts in Washington and in the DFW Metroplex.
Member of Congress
Protecting Our Care
This month, Senate Republicans introduced their own version of Trumpcare that is just as much of a disaster for hardworking Americans as the House Republicans’ ACA replacement. This bill will not only kick 22 million Americans off health insurance, but it will also cut off access to crucial family planning, impose a crushing age tax on our seniors, shred protections for individuals with preexisting conditions, and strip Medicare of critical funding. This bill takes funding away from those who need it most, and places it in the hands of the wealthy elite.
Congressman Marc Veasey speaks out against the Senate healthcare bill and the negative effect it would have on millennials at the Future Forum Press Conference.
Healthcare is a human right, not a privilege. We must continue to raise our voices on the devastating impact the Senate health care bill will have on our families. I encourage you to share your personal ACA story on my official Facebook and Twitter pages, utilizing #MyHealthMyFuture, as we continue to fight tooth and nail against this inhumane bill.
Expanding Job Opportunities
This month I was proud to vote in favor of legislation that equips DFW Metroplex residents with the skills they need for the good-paying job opportunities in defense, aerospace, and automobile industries that are right here in our backyard. H.R. 2353, The Strengthening Career and Technical Education (CTE) for the 21st Century Act, is a bipartisan bill that aims to ensure that American workers can continue to compete in today’s global economy by investing in America’s high schools and supporting CTE programs all across the country. While President Trump continues to turn his back on the American worker, I will continue to fight for working class Americans.
On June 19, 1865, news of the abolition of slavery finally reached the state of Texas two and a half years after President Lincoln’s Emancipation Proclamation was declared the law of the land. To commemorate this historic day for Texas, we gather with family, friends, and our community to celebrate. It is only when we reflect on our history that we can truly begin to build a brighter future.
Recognizing World Refugee Day
On June 20, 2017, people across the globe recognized World Refugee Day. In recognition of World Refugee Day, I spoke on the House floor and shared Bothina Matar’s story. Her family’s story reminds us why it is more important than ever that the United States send a clear message of support for efforts that protect the most vulnerable populations among us.

Celebrating Immigrant Heritage Month
Congressman Veasey and his Washington, D.C. staff sport their #IStandWithImmigrants t-shirts in support of Immigrant Heritage Month.
Immigrants bring their skills and cultures and a belief in the American dream that benefits us all. They work alongside us, teach our children, and worship in our communities. They contribute to the innovation that has kept America on the cutting edge for decades. In the DFW Metroplex, it’s our rich diversity that helps us maintain our economic success. That is why #IStandWithImmigrants and will continue to fight against the Administration’s anti-immigrant agenda.
Standing Up for Our Veterans
Homeownership is a pillar of the American dream and a goal that should not be out of reach for our nation’s veterans. This is why I was proud to introduce H.R. 2777, the Veteran Home Loan Choices Act. This bill ensures that our nation’s veterans are provided all home loan options available to them, so that they can make a well informed decision when selecting a home loan for their families.
The Veteran Home Loan Choices Act has bipartisan support and is currently endorsed by several organizations, including the Veterans Association of Real Estate Professionals (VAREP), Association of the United States Army (AUSA), Association of the United States Navy (AUSN), and the National Military Family Association (NMFA), Reserve Officer Association (ROA) and American Veterans.
Taking a Shift at Lockheed Martin
This month I worked alongside Lockheed Martin’s production team, and learned firsthand how the F-35 fighter jet is made during my ‘Marc Means Business’ work day. Lockheed Martin is one of the DFW Metroplex’s largest employers, and I’m proud to serve alongside the hardworking employees in my district.
