Washington, DC – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (D-TX), founder of the Voting Rights Caucus, and current co-chair, introduced a bicameral Resolution with Senator Ron Wyden (D-OR) to designate September as “National Voting Rights Month”. The resolution will encourage voter registration in the month of September, and push Congress to restore the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

"I join the Dallas community in mourning the senseless and tragic death of Botham Jean. As I’ve said all too recently, there is a systemic failure in our criminal justice system to protect the unjustified shootings of black men and boys in this country.
“First, as a father, I feel strongly that the verdict reached yesterday in the killing of Jordan Edwards was just. I have a great deal of respect for law enforcement. But, for far too long, unjustified killings and shootings of black men and boys have been taken lightly and not given fair due process in our criminal justice system.
"Senator John McCain was a true patriot, who loved his family and this country before all else. He faced many hard fought battles, but his grit, his belief in working together for the greater good, and his deep loyalty to those in uniform show the measure of his character. He inspired many, and persevered for this country.
"I believe the work of our military, and the sacrifices their families make on behalf of our country, deserve our continued support. That is why in February, I introduced a bill that would prohibit the expenditure of millions of taxpayer dollars on President Trump’s frivolous exercise.
"Aretha’s songs were the soundtrack to a higher power. Chain of Fools; RESPECT; Say A Little Prayer – her lyrics were a powerful croon that transported a generation. Her train picked up 'sinners and saints.' Her stardom on and off the stage is an ode to her personified perfection. She made every stage her hallelujah; and carried us into her state of grace.
"At a moment when our country needed moral leadership, the President failed us. Racially charged hate and bigotry will always be a stain on this country’s history, but we can not allow it to be a part of our future.
Following the opening of an investigation by Texas state officials into the possible neglect of a minor who died upon leaving an Immigration and Customs Enforcement facility in Dilley, Rep.Marc Veasey issued the statement below:
“3D guns are a public safety nightmare that needs to be dealt with in Congress head-on,” said Congressman Veasey. “The Trump Administration can’t shirk responsibility over this catastrophic mishandling.”
