"First, as a father, I feel strongly that the verdict reached yesterday in the killing of Jordan Edwards was just. I have a great deal of respect for law enforcement. But, for far too long, unjustified killings and shootings of black men and boys have been taken lightly and not given fair due process in our criminal justice system.

"Senator John McCain was a true patriot, who loved his family and this country before all else. He faced many hard fought battles, but his grit, his belief in working together for the greater good, and his deep loyalty to those in uniform show the measure of his character. He inspired many, and persevered for this country. I'm proud the NDAA could honor his legacy, and I share with the entire McCain family my deepest condolences."

"I believe the work of our military, and the sacrifices their families make on behalf of our country, deserve our continued support. That is why in February, I introduced a bill that would prohibit the expenditure of millions of taxpayer dollars on President Trump's frivolous exercise. A better use of those resources, would be for this Administration to work with Congress to provide additional support for our military families, ease the transition to civilian life, and assist in operations at the Department of Veteran Affairs," said Congressman Veasey.

"Aretha's songs were the soundtrack to a higher power. Chain of Fools; RESPECT; Say A Little Prayer – her lyrics were a powerful croon that transported a generation. Her train picked up 'sinners and saints.' Her stardom on and off the stage is an ode to her personified perfection. She made every stage her hallelujah; and carried us into her state of grace. She cared deeply for her community of Detroit, her family, and of course, the music that kept our souls alight. Forever and ever, you'll stay in our hearts."

"At a moment when our country needed moral leadership, the President failed us. Racially charged hate and bigotry will always be a stain on this country's history, but we can not allow it to be a part of our future. President Trump's failure to condemn the actions of racial separatists constitutes a lack of understanding for the inequalities and discrimination many blacks, Jews and people of color still face today. And yet, the President spends his time picking Twitter wars, and insulting an esteemed black Congresswoman's intelligence.

"3D guns are a public safety nightmare that needs to be dealt with in Congress head-on," said Congressman Veasey. "The Trump Administration can't shirk responsibility over this catastrophic mishandling."

"I'm very saddened to hear about the passing of former Congressman Ron Dellums, but I join in celebrating his decades of service to the Golden State and to this country.

From the City of Berkeley, to the war torn towns of Vietnam, and in the halls of Congress, Ron was a picture of patriotism, honor, decency, and had an unabated passion for the people he represented. As the first African-American chairman of the Armed Services Committee, Ron made his mark on influential foreign policy in the People's House.

"After President Trump's capitulation to Putin in Helsinki – our 2018 elections are in serious danger of further interference from Russia, said Congressman Veasey. Republicans have failed to put any measures into action to respond to Trump's alliance with Putin.

July 16, 2018

"President Trump's display in Helsinki was a total capitulation to Putin," said Congressman Veasey. "He is weakening our democracy for a congratulatory hand shake and an ego stroke from Putin. The President's failure to confront an adversary, to protect and preserve our lasting democratic institutions, shows he is gravely unfit to be our Commander-in-Chief."
