PHOTO RELEASE: Rep. Veasey Recognizes South Dallas Students during Annual Congressional App Challenge Reception

Raymond Hernandez, Cesar Escobedo and Lisette Benavides of Townview School of Business and Management honored as TX-33’s second annual Congressional App Challenge’s winners

Dallas, TX – Today, Congressman Marc Veasey, TX-33, honored nine talented Townview School of Business and Management students during the annual Congressional App Challenge reception at El Centro Community College in Dallas, TX. Raymond Hernandez, Cesar Escobedo and Lisette Benavides composed the winning “Dark Matter” team that created the innovative app, “Accountability Tracker”. The app was developed to help other students establish and track personal and professional goals. The winning app will be displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit for a year.

This year’s participants included nine students from Townview School of Business and Management. Each three person team submitted a user-friendly application that promoted engagement in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) fields. Participants were judged by Dr. Taylor Johnson and Dr. David Levine, UT-Arlington computer science professors, and Dr. Bryan Reece, STEM Grant Project Director at El Centro Community College, on the originality of their app, the ease of use, as well as the societal impact or helpfulness of their entry.

Congressman Veasey honored Townview School of Business Management students during the second annual Congressional App Challenge.

“Hosting today’s competition is part of my ongoing effort to encourage more young people to develop skills in the STEM fields, so they can be prepared to meet the needs of the 21st century economy. I was impressed with each student’s dedication to their projects. I hope that the participating students serve as an example to their peers that learning to code is a valuable skill that they can use in their future careers. ” Veasey said.
