CONGRESSMAN MARC VEASEY’S STATEMENT ON 2013 CONTINUING RESOLUTION

March 6, 2013

WASHINGTON, D.C.– Today, Wednesday, March 6, Congressman Marc Veasey (Texas-33) voted in favor of important budget legislation intended to avoid a government shutdown. Rep. Veasey’s support for the Continuing Resolution demonstrates his willingness to work with Members of both parties to find a constructive path to long-term economic stability and job growth. Following today’s vote, Congressman Veasey released the following statement:

“The bill presented today was far from ideal. However, I supported the measure because we must work to break the partisan logjam, find middle-ground to stabilize and restore confidence in the economy, and protect jobs in the 33rd Congressional District. The legislation includes $380 million for the Medium Extended Air Defense Systems (MEAD) program which is manufactured at Lockheed Martin in Grand Prairie. It also provides $6 billion for the manufacturing of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter plane in Fort Worth.

Time and again, Democrats have demonstrated a willingness to reach across the partisan divide in order to solve problems. This same sense of responsibility and accountability is urgently needed from the Republican leadership. We cannot continue operating on short term options and run our government month-to-month. Nor can we cut spending on the backs of middle class families, students and seniors.”

Current funding for government operations is set to expire later this month on March 27th. The Fiscal Year 2013 Continuing Resolution and Defense, Military Construction and Veterans Affairs Appropriations bills intends to avoid a government shutdown by extending funding for government operations until the end of the current fiscal year on September 30th. Today’s resolution was approved by the House with a vote of 267-151, with 52 other Democrats joining Congressman Veasey in voting for the measure.
